- Subject: Technical Services workstations RE: Mil Cataloging - printing
Gang --
I'd like to elaborate on this question (I think it is following the same thread) from William (below)
Our library is a medium sized public library, and Tech Services has four full-time staff that all share tasks of copy cataloging on a state union catalog, item data entry on our local automated system (soon to be III), acquisitions, materials processing, and ILL. We are having cataloging training next week, going online with circ at the end of Oct, and online with acq in December. Not having been through the training is making it hard to get equipment orders together for the new system. Our trainer has been very helpful, but there is nothing like the wisdom of experience from the field.
How do Millenium libraries handle printing spine labels for cataloging, workslips for acq, and reports for ILL, all from the same staff desk? Do you share different types of network printers for each of the types of paper/label stock? Or does each staff person have several printers - besides the purchase cost how do you get enough desktop space?
We've been trying to imagine several different scenarios, and so far are thinking that maybe each staff person keeps one of the workhorse Okidata Microline workstations connected to the individual PC for spine label printing. And then use a networked system laser printer for whole sheet printing, like acq workforms.
Are any Millenium libraries using Okidata Microline printers for cataloging spine label printing?
What do you use for acq workslip printing?
How do you handle multitask workstations, esp with regard to printing.
Thanks in advance for your comments, suggestions and advice.
Paul

For acquisition, serials control, e-reserves, we may use local
printer, instead of system printer.
How about Mil cataloging: should we do as FAQ asks: "sheet labels
can be printed only on a laser system printer", or can they also be
printed using local printer?
Any experience? Good idea? Thanks.
