>246s are traced in the title index because they are variant forms of the 245 by which patrons are likely to search for desired items. Since there is no "authority control" for 245s, 246s are vital for tracing variant forms of the 245.

Majority of our collection is music and most of them are controlled with
uniform titles. And only when variant titles are referenced in the
authority, I skip 246s. For instance, Beethoven's 3rd symphony is also
called "Eroica symphony." When a user searches by Eroica, there will be
different entries: a see reference, and a small # of hits that include
Eroica in 246. Only when you follow the see ref, you will get to the
complete list of that symphony, but not many people pay attention to the
see ref but jump right into that incomplete result under Eroica. That's
why we discourage users to search by titles but they still do.

>On the other hand, I would not include 490s in your title index, nor would I have them display in your OPAC (although that is perhaps more a matter of personal preference). Including 490s in the title index causes all kinds of chaos with OPAC retrieval/display

I didn't know that you could add and remove certain fields from indexes.
That would definitely solve the problem. Can we do that locally or is it
something III has to do for us?
