We are now having everyone use a dept. code at the beginning of their
create list names, allowing you to get a listing by department when you
sort by 'name'. Folks can either sort by name/dept., or if they've
created the list in Millennium, they can sort by initials to see just
their lists. The dept./name sort makes it easier to periodically ask
dept. heads to review the files from their area to see if there's any
that can be deleted, and you can get a sense of who are the heavy users
of Create Lists. It also makes scanning the list of file names when you
are selecting from a range of review files a tiny bit easier, since you
can try to train your eye to ignore files that don't begin with your
dept. code.

I agree with Elizabeth that III should definitely find a way to include
the file number in any range selection function to make it easier to
locate the file you need. It clearly is possible, since there are
already two list selection functions that display the file numbers:
Create List 'Copy a File' and 'Use Existing Search'. The display of
file numbers would make list selection in Global Update, Mil Stats, etc.
much more efficient. If III is now going to allow us to create up to
1000 review files, and I don't doubt that some of the larger consortiums
make actually approach this number, they must surely realize that
something has to be done to make the file selection easier.

I feel an enhancement request coming on...

Subject: Re: Number of lists

I know what you mean about this. Since you *can* sort by file name in
Millennium I have taken to beginning all of my searches with my initials

which helps as any list I want to search against tends to be one I've
run
in the first place. It does get messy though and we "only" have 120
lists. We had 40 until we got a new server a year and a half ago and
with
9 (now 10) branches, I truly wonder how they lasted as long as they did!

...
r in global update, or in MilStats. It's really time-consuming to have
to
scroll up and down trying to locate the file you want, especially when
you
already know the file number. Some of our folks have learned the trick
of
naming files somethings easy to spot, like "!!!!!!!!!!!!My New
Books!!!!!!"
but when there are several files with names like that, it gets really
ugly. It drives me crazy with a list of 160 files...I can't imagine
what
this is like with a much longer list.
