I've been wondering about the relationship and/or overlap between the
webpub definitions file [webpub.def] and the MARC Label Names function
available in the new Advanced System Access and Administration [ASAA].
Perhaps this has something to do with the functioning of the webpub.def
file.

The User Manual entry for the webpub file is on page #105418, under the
heading "Editing the Bibliographic Record Display File" [took me a while
to dig this out!]. One of the functions of the webpub file is to define
the labels for fields to appear in the bib record display. I
remembered from the ASAA training at the May IUG that there was a file
in ASAA that also is used to control the MARC field labels that appear
in public search mode, "MARC Label Names", and wondered how the two
interact.

I have not yet created a webpub.def file, therefore it appears that the
MARC field labels currently displaying in our opac must be coming from
the 'MARC Label Names" file, accessed via ASAA. The ASAA
documentation on "MARC Label Names" states that if the Public
Definitions file [presumably webpub.def] contains an entry for a MARC
field tag and there's an entry for that field type & MARC tag in the
"MARC Label Names" file, then the telnet/web opac will display the label
from the "MARC Label Names" file. There's also another file in ASAA
that affects the display of labels for variable fields, "Long Names for
Variable Length Fields". I believe this is invoked whenever there isn't
an entry in the "MARC Label Names" file. It's not clear what happens if
you have an entry in the webpub.def file, but don't have a corresponding
entry in the "MARC Label Names" or "Long Names for Variable Fields"
files.

The webpub.def file allows you to customize the bib record display
labels by language, scope, and patron type. If you have
internationalization [e.g. alternate lang. opac], the ASAA files also
allow you to customize the label/field names in those languages. If
you *don't* want to customize bib display labels by scope or patron
type, I'm not sure I understand why you would want/need to use the
webpub.def file, rather than just control the settings via ASAA .
Unless, you haven't had the ASAA training and can't access those files?

I haven't found any entries in the Phase 3 User Manual concerning the
ASAA functions, other than a reference to the special authorizations
needed to access this function in Mil Administration. CSDirect does
have an FAQ on ASAA, with a link to the ASAA manual. It's at:
http://csdirect.iii.com/faq/asaa.shtml
BTW - for those of you who took the training in May - there are updated
pages of the ASAA manual on the CSDirect version.

Did any of the other beta phase 3 sites successfully test the
creation/use of the webpub.def file? I wonder if there's a bug at work
here.

Sorry, no answers to your dilemma, just more questions...

Subject: RE: webpubdef file

I've been trying everything I can think of ... and just can't get it to
work
at all (not even kind of).

I started out trying a scoped webpub.def (webpub_s#.def) in the staging
area
and restarted the web server ... no go.
I tried an unscoped webpub.def in the staging area and restarted the web
server ... still no go.
Then I tried it scoped in the live area ... nothing.
Finally I tried it unscoped in the live area and still nothing happened.

How did you get it to work ... as much as you have?

Anyone else?

Matt
