THE CITY OF LAS CRUCES HAS AN OPENING FOR A
SENIOR LIBRARIAN
(Public Services/Library)
Full-time, Regular
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Master's Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited facility. Directly-related experience may substitute for education. Please include a copy of your most recent transcript with application.
EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years experience as a professional librarian in a public or academic library with at least one year of demonstrated supervisory experience.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATION: New Mexico Professional Librarian's Certification desired.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Under the direction of the Library Administrator, position is responsible for supervision, scheduling and training up to 10 staff and additional volunteers in order to maintain daily operations of designated unit and to provide respectful customer service. Tasks include, but are not limited to:
a. Makes recommendations for hiring, discipline, and termination of staff and conducts annual staff evaluations.
b. Provides training to staff on an on-going basis. Trains, schedules, guides, and supervises volunteers.
c. Ensures all staff adheres to policies and procedures for efficient, safe, and respectful services.
2. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of assigned area. Tasks include, but are not limited to:
a. Supervises, formulates, and implements decisions regarding the daily operations of assigned area that may include computer use, telephone switchboard, TTY and operation of other library services and equipment.
b. Prepares daily and monthly schedules and makes changes as needed. Produces and distributes unit Schedule on a monthly basis. Approves changes and requests for leave.
c. Examines and approves bi-weekly time sheets. Schedules staff to cover all library service hours (presently 64 hours per week).
d. Formulates and submits budget requests to the Library Administrator. Supervises the handling of money received from fines and lost materials. Oversees purchasing of materials necessary to the function of assigned area.
e. Respectfully handles patron complaints on overdues, lost materials, collection agency referrals and library rules of behavior.
f. Processes department monthly statistics and produces monthly and annual reports.
g. Provides readers' advisory services, reference assistance, and bibliographic instruction for library patrons.
h. If assigned to Technical Services unit, Catalogs materials to be added to the Library collection, particularly those items that do not have records in OCLC.
i. Plans for future growth and automation of assigned area.
3. Responsibilities related to efficient conduct of entire library operation. Tasks include, but are not limited to:
a. Responsible for collection development of print and non-print materials for assigned areas. Receives,
reviews, and searches requests received from customers and Library staff for materials to add to the Library collection.
b. Complies with and implements City of Las Cruces and Library policies and procedures.
c. Develops, coordinates, and conducts library programs. Writes and publishes marketing materials to promote library events.
d. Assists with programs in areas outside primary service area when necessary.
e. Coordinates incident, accident, and safety reporting as events occur. Completes paperwork and directs actions of Security contract staff as necessary. Responsible for securing and alarming the facility at close of business when assigned.
f. Researches, writes and monitors grant activities, including preparing and submitting grant proposals to City Council, Grantors, and providing grant activity reports to grantors in a timely manner.
Additional Functions/Tasks:
1. May respond to building alarms, on-call, after hours.
2. May empty outside book-drops when closed and on holidays.
3. Serves on library committee's as assigned.
4. Assumes total responsibility of the Library when designated .
5. Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of library materials, resources and procedures. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with the public and work effectively with others. Ability to interact with a diverse cultural community in a courteous and respectful manner. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is desirable. Ability to work with young children and young adults. Skill in planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the activities of staff and volunteers. Flexibility in scheduling is required. Ability to work with minimum supervision and effectively handle competing demands. Basic mathematic ability for compiling library statistics. Strong supervisory skills and abilities. Technical-level reading and professional writing skills. Working knowledge of personal computer with MS Office software, library database, Internet, and Publisher. Knowledge of cataloging and acquisitions in an automated environment, particularly the OCLC database. Knowledge of library operations, including library automation systems, internet resources, Anglo American Cataloging Rules, Revision 2 (AACR2R), Dewey Decimal Classification system, Library of Congress Subject Headings and Rule Interpretations, and MARC 21 coding. Ability to conduct effective training for diverse skill levels within library staff and volunteers.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Position functions within a library setting with no notable environmental conditions.
PHYSICAL FACTORS: Position involves frequent bending and stooping, reaching above shoulder height, squatting and push/pull strength to 30 pounds associated with library collection maintenance and reference service. Lifting and carrying is typically restricted to 3-5 books (10-25 pounds) frequently during the day. Pushing/pulling book cart weighing from 60 pounds loaded; frequent walking, reaching, bending, kneeling and stooping; frequent telephone and computer use; auditory and oral communication abilities to operate security alarm and alert security guard utilizing a two-way communication device.
WORK SITUATION FACTORS: Position may involve night, weekend, or extended hours and call-back status. Position involves the ability to travel to various sites. Extensive public contact and exposure to unfiltered Internet is inherent in the position. Position involves competing demands such as adhering to strict deadlines, performing multiple tasks, and responding to customer inquiries and complaints. Involves interfacing with a diverse cultural community.
SALARY: $2,992.58 per month plus benefits.
