I forgot that most academic libraries use the student id w/photo as the
library card. At a public library the lost card can be used to borrow the
$200 book since most do not have photo library cards and we typically do not
require additional id beyond the card.

Michael,
We would have liked to use it on the self check, as an additional security
measure. At present, anyone who picks up someone else's card can borrow on
it using the self check. A PIN validation would guard against that.
This is highly relevant in an academic library. We often get patrons
claiming they never borrowed that $200 book that is on their record and not
returned.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need PIN verification to use self check
out? We have the 3M 6210 and do not use the PIN verification.

Hi Mieko,
When we turned on PIN validation, our 3M validation wasn't working correctly
(we couldn't use them at all), and we had to open a call to ask III to fix
it. But there are functions both on the 3M machines (depending on the model
- it needs to be set to request PIN validation) and III that need to be both
working.
Then we decided we didn't want it on for our 3M units (it was an issue to do
with the format of PINS and our public patrons), only for web based
functions, and so III turned the 3M validation off for us.
So now we have PIN validation turned on, but not for our 3M units.
And further to the message someone else sent on this, we can also confirm
that having it turned on for 3M machines is system wide. We explored having
it on in some locations and not others, and that was not possible.

Our 3M self-check machine has been out of service for some time while it was
learning to speak proper Welsh! We have brought it out in the open but it
refuses to validate PINs. A 3M engineer checked the unit and told us that
it was Innovative's software that was at fault. We are still on Release
2002 Phase 2.
I have opened a call with the help desk but wonder if anyone else has come
across this problem. Thanks.
Mieko
