Carol,
It is possible to do this and we have done that very thing because of a
similar situation -- our University has changed their barcode format and all
students/employees are to get and use this card. As you can imagine, this
has caused some headaches because of all the different systems used on
campus, but it has happened.
My understanding is that the item barcodes actually sits in a separate
database from the patron barcodes. So our barcode format for our items has
remained the same, using the check digit. We did have to contact III to get
the patron barcode format changed, however, without a check digit.

Does anyone know if it's possible to turn off the check digit for patron
barcodes yet still have the check digit function for item barcodes? I'm
assuming it's not possible since all barcodes are stored in the same
index. Our University is implementing a new one-card system that
doesn't include check digits for identifying patrons. As you can
imagine...we're not very happy.
