If you set "AVS performs adacency search" to YES, then words next to each
other will be treated as a phrase. If no records are found using the
phrase as the query, the terms will be searched as a Boolean AND
search. What happens next if no records are found with the AND search depends:
- If "AVS performs OR search" is set to NO, the search will end with a "no
records found" message.
- If "AVS performs OR search" is set to YES, the search terms will be ORed
(after 1-2 character words are dropped).

If you set "AVS performs adacency search" to NO, then words next to each
other will be automatically ANDed (i.e., they will not be searched as a
phrase). If no records are found, what happens next depends on your
setting for "AVS performs OR search" (as above).

Above behavior is described on Page # 101241 of the Phase 3 manual on
CSDirect in the section "Web OPAC search modification works as follows".

(Not sure what manual examples are causing confusion; manual version and
page number?)
