Carol - Stick to your guns! The first time our university forced a
one-card ID card on us, we turned off check digits, and found lots of
incorrectly entered item barcodes, since it is impossible to turn off
one without the other. We reverted back to the original design after
that. The second time the university insisted on a one-card, we lobbied
for keeping a barcode for our use on the card, made according to our
specifications, in addition to the ID magstripe. This is working much
better than adapting to the new magstripe, which can't take into account
the constraints of our existing investment in older technology (item
barcodes).

Subject: Patron Barcode Check Digits

Does anyone know if it's possible to turn off the check digit for patron

barcodes yet still have the check digit function for item barcodes? I'm

assuming it's not possible since all barcodes are stored in the same
index. Our University is implementing a new one-card system that
doesn't include check digits for identifying patrons. As you can
imagine...we're not very happy.
