Jon,

I don't know really what the difference would be between the expectations of an academic versus a public audience in this case.  If what you are concerned about is the screen presentation, that can easily be manipulated in conjunction with the help-desk staff (#105127).

The product works basically the same way as the telnet version or the standalone self-check units. Patrons wand their barcode, the item barcode and voila. BUT, it does not include the desensitizing features of the 3rd-party standalone versions, so that is definitely something to keep in mind.

Personally, I cannot see the use of the Innovative Self-Check products in any library where items are security protected, unless that protection is RFID. In magstripe situations, the 3rd party self-check systems just seem more appropriate.

BTW, we are a 3M self-check site and the one machine accounts for ~16% of our total non-reserves circulation and has allowed us to extend basic circ service during our hours when the circ desk is not staffed.
