I can't speak to Expect, but I do recommend Iolo Macro Magic for automated tasks. I've recently added thousands of item records, complete with all of the info necessary, with almost no attention on my part, after simply recording the keystrokes into Macro Magic. AND, there was practically no learning curve involved.
(Someone on this list recommended Macro Magic, for which I'll be forever grateful!)

At my age learning new things is no longer easy, so before I venture off
into learning/writing Expect I'd like to be sure that it will do what I
need. So, for example, can you write a script which opens telnet, logs
you in, navigates to circ statistics and then emails a report?
I spent about two hours this morning trying to figure out my needs for
daily tasks, and came to the conclusion that I was doing steps which
could be replicated by a macro program.
And, do people trade Expect scripts?
Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
