- Subject: Millennium Technical Services Workflow
Hello all : I work for the London Public Library, a medium size library that has had Millennium as our system for approximately one year. We are looking at the work flow in our Technical Services department and want to use Millennium to its greatest advantage, while eliminating duplication of work. At present when the acquisition staff order an item they use the z39.50 function to search for cataloguing copy. When they are successful they download the record. When they cannot find copy they create a minimal record for the item. When the item arrives and is received it is passed on to our bibliographic maintenance clerks (BMC), who search our database to determine whether the item is new to the system or an adder. If it is an adder the item is processed and sent on to the finishers. For new items having the minimal record screen, they again search the z39.50 looking for cataloguing copy. If successful they download the record and the item is then passed on to the cataloguing assistants. How do other Millennium sites handle this workflow. We are looking at the acquisition and BMC positions and wondering if it would be feasible to incorporate the two jobs. Is there a smoother workflow we can achieve to eliminate the repetition of work? Any suggestions? You can email me directly or send to the list.
Thank you.
