Jim,

We should probably bring this up at the next consortia meeting and keep
submitting it as an enhancement. Frustrating that this has been going on
for two years. I can't imagine why anyone would want to cancel all holds!
Your ideas about the messages popping up are good, but mostly I just want
the darn button gone. Popup messages confirming an action is always good
reinforcement for the patron. I wish there was a message that pops up when
they renew their items also. Now, they have to know to scroll down the
screen and look for the message after the due date. Most patrons miss this
also.

Thanks, Donna

Subject: Webpac Cancel All holds button

Donna et al,

Apparently doing something about making it a little more difficult for
patrons to mistakenly trigger the CANCEL ALL button is simply not seen as a
very high priority by III. This is truly unfortunate, as it is an important
issue for us and I'm sure for many public libraries. Do you not agree that
this should be an easy enhancement ?

This enhancement is just not getting done, and frankly, I don't understand
why not. This has been asked for via consortium groups, etc, but it doesn't
happen. Here is a recent correspondence that I forwarded to III

"I have asked for this change for at least 2 years in enhancement forums,
public library consortia meetings, etc. but it never happens. It has
appeared on many lists for enhancements. Is this change in the works ? :
Libraries report patrons complaining that they inadvertently selected
"cancel all" holds when meaning to cancel only some. As an option, provide
a confirmation message when a patron selects Renew All or Cancel All holds,
such as "Are you sure you want to cancel all holds ? y/n". Alternatively,
make the "cancel all" button itself optional within system options. A
patron then wanting to cancel all his requests can simly mark all items
individually and then click "Cancel selected items" (57, 63, 105, 109, 171,
725, 583)
This was voted on by the Innovative User Group. It was also a request
submitted by Public Library Consortia. Once a patron inadvertently cancels
holds, there is no way to retrieve the holds. I really hope we get this
enhancement. It should definitely at least ask for a confirm, but there
should be an option to remove it entirely (as the enhancement request
suggests) This is a huge complaint in our system."

The essence of the reply I received from III in July, 2003, was
"There are always far more enhancement ideas than can be done in any cycle,
so it gets weighed against many other equally, often more, desirable
enhancements. It wasn't chosen in the last round. While it is not
necessarily a complex change in itself, any change to an area requires
testing, both by Innovative and beta sites, and updating of documentation,
both for libraries and our staff. Unfortunately for this particular
enhancement, we haven't been targeting that area with other, more pressing
development and so haven't been able to slip it in."

That may be true, but I feel we have made the need for this enhancement
abundantly clear and we are not getting timely results. Do others agree ?
