Hi Karen:

We still have our telnet catalog available, but many of the features,
such as OPACMSG, are really optimized for the webpac.

You can access our catalog at: stacks.library.miami.edu login=library

If you do an "other call no. search" for dvd-600 or vid-3433, you'll
pull up an example where the opacmsg still displays nicely in the
telnet. [local call no. in webpac [ibisweb.miami.edu]]

We chose to display the opacmsg within the call# box, rather than
create a separate column. We did this because most of our items don't
use the opacmsg, so we didn't want a 'blank' column appearing for every
record, when it's really only needed on a comparatively few. The
problem with this choice in the telnet catalog is that you have limited
display space for the call no. In most cases, our opacmsg is either
truncated or doesn't display at all in the telnet opac. Try a keyword
search = street map ; or other call no = thesis 2002. do the same
searches in our webpac to see the 'intended' display.

Hope this helps, cheryl

Subject: OPACMSG field display

I am in the process of convincing staff to standardize the way we handle

new books by implementing the OPACMSG field. I've seen how this looks on

several WebOPACs and staff think this is fine.

However, we are still heavily reliant on telnet and dumb terminals for
our in-house patrons and staff since we have not moved to Millennium.

Does someone out there use the OPACMSG field and has a telnet version of

their OPAC still available for us to take a look at? If so, please send
me the telnet address and one or two titles that make use of the OPACMSG

field.

Many thanks!
