David -- If you go under Database Options and choose the option titled "Change defaults used in record loading"  For my system, it is option number 22...your numbers may vary.  You should be able to change the default for record loading for each type of record that you create through Read/Write MARC Records.

 1 > studen : students
 2 > illlib : ILL LIBRARIES
 3 > adjunc : adjunct
 4 > facult : faculty
 5 > admin : administration
 6 > staff : staff
 7 > dual : dualenrollment

Upon loading patron records, how do I get the system to let me choose which patron type to load?
