My understanding is unless you use Innovative's standard barcode format
you will have to specify that the string entered is a barcode by prefixing
it with the index tag "b".
The length of barcodes does not matter but since there is only one barcode
index containing both patron and item barcodes, you may want to make sure
that they can be easily distinguished.

I suggest you check this with your self-check machine vendor.
