We, too, are concerned about privacy but do use the LPATRON field for those (too frequent) occasions when staff discovers - AFTER the item has been checked in - that a part is missing or there is damage and we need to know who to contact. We are awaiting the enhancement that allows this field to be cleared after a specified length of time. In the meantime, I have contacted III and been told there is a way they can temporarily turn off the protection that prevents the LPATRON field from being manually updated and so we could run an update (rapid update, I think) to clear the field. This would only clear current information and would have to be repeated periodically. It's good to know this is an option, but at this point we've decided just to wait for the enhancement. We have included a statement in our privacy policy explaining that patron information is retained in the item record until the item is checked out again.

Subject:	LPATRON and privacy

Our director is concerned about the privacy issues surrounding the use
of the LPATRON field in the item record. We currently have the check-in
option set to "yes". I am aware of the enhancement request to allow us
to set an automatic deletion of the information in this field after a
set time period. Our director would like to know if the use of the
LPATRON field is a common practice among Innovative libraries, that is,
are other libraries setting the check-in option to "yes" and retaining
the patron information in item records? Thank you.
