- Subject: Re: Why is LYRCIRC higher than TOT CHKOUT?
I had to jump in on this thread since TOT CHKOUT in Course Reserves is a
long standing issue of ours. It's important to us to have all
checkouts, reserve or otherwise, recorded in the TOT CHKOUT field. We
use this field to make weeding and collection development decisions, and
if an item circulates 30 times while on reserve, and 3 times in the
regular collection, we want to know about those 30 circs.
The documentation Mieko quotes regarding the behavior of the TOT CHKOUT
field when items are taken off course reserve is ambiguous. One
paragraph states that the original values of LOCATION, ITYPE and TOT
CHKOUT as stored in the SAVE ITEM field are restored to the item record
when the item is taken off reserve (or set inactive). This means the
number of times the item circulated while on reserve is NOT added to the
TOT CHKOUT field.
Later, in the discussion of the RESER NOTE field, the documentation
states that the number of times the item circ'd while on reserve IS
added to the TOT CHKOUT field.
In actuality, if you use Millennium, the reserve circs are NEVER added
to the TOT CHKOUT field when the item is removed from the course,
whether you store RESER NOTEs in your item records or not.
In a previous release of Millennium, it was true that reserve circs were
added to TOT CHKOUT, but this is no longer the case in the current
release. We've been told by III that this was a design change and there
are plans in a future release to make addition of the reserve circs to
TOT CHKOUT an option.
Interestingly enough, in the current release, the character system
behaves differently than Millennium. When you remove your items from
reserve using the character system, the circs while on reserve ARE added
to the TOT CHKOUT field.
