Re: Why is LYRCIRC higher than TOT CHKOUT?

This is a question that comes up on this list regularly - usually this
time of year :). I knew there was a section of the user manual which
explained this but it has taken me at least 15 minutes to find the correct
section :(. Anyway...

Go to page #102476 of the user manual, scroll down to the end of the page
to a section called "SAVE ITEM and RESERVE NOTE Fields". The TOT CHKOUT
value of any item currently on reserve is the number of times the item was
checked out since it was last put on reserve.

If you set the Circ system option "Reserves: Store course reserve history
in item and bibliographic records" to "yes", the number of times the item
was circulated is added to the TOT CHKOUT field when you take the item off
reserve. What is not explicit in the manual (or at least I cannot find
it but I believe it is still true) is that if you set the above Circ
system option to "no", the OCHKOUT value in the SAVE ITEM field replaces
the TOT CHKOUT value when the item is taken off reserve. I understand
this is because some libraries do not want to include checkouts while the
item is on reserve in the TOT CHKOUT figure.

The LYRCIRC value is not affected until you clear it in Rapid Update and
does include all checkouts whethr the item is or is not on reserve.
