TITLE:	Catalog and Reference Librarian, Metadata, Librarian I, LIB 238

DESCRIPTION:	Reporting to the Manager of the Bibliographic Enhancement Team, catalogs materials in all formats with no copy or inadequate copy.  Providing metadata for digital files and other resources will be the primary focus.  Provides leadership in cataloging issues, including knowledge of metadata languages, such as HTML, EAD, XML and TEI, and their applications to web and other resources; remains current in national cataloging policies and issues; participates in development of local practices and workflow.  Works closely with the MSU Digital and Multimedia Center.  The MSU Libraries is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, contributes NACO records to the national authority file, and is a participant in the CONSER Publications Pattern Initiative.  This librarian will also participate approximately quarter-time in Main Library Reference, providing some combination of desk, chat, and email services.  Librarians participate in professional development and research activities and serve on library and university committees as elected or assigned.  Other appropriate duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program; foreign language expertise; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to be flexible in a dynamic and changing environment; ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, students, and staff; ability to work independently as well as part of a team; ability to prioritize and balance various unit needs; attention to detail; preparation and commitment to conduct independent scholarship consistent with a librarian appointment; capacity and commitment to engage independently in continuing professional development.

Desired:  Knowledge of metadata issues and applications. 

COMPENSATION:  Minimum salary is $40,000.  Michigan State University provides generous fringe benefits.
