I'd like to utilize WAM for this, but if I make all of
the links "WAM-compliant", then people on-campus will have to login with
their ID as well, which we don't want. Is there a way to do both?
<<<
I assume you mean the rewriting proxy?
The way you do it is you set the service level & verification requirements in the WAM table and then associate the web logins from on-campus with a higher service level and all off-campus logins have a lower service level.
Then you set the WAM table to service levels at the off-campus and above, but verify only for the service levels below on-campus. In our case, on-campus=4 and off-campus=3 and all of our databases (except for FirstSearch) look like so:
4 > Service Level 3
5 > Verify 4
On-campus users go straight through the proxy server without authenticating. Off-campus must authenticate.
This is explained at #102149 in the manual.
The one thing that this doesn't accomplish, though, is to set it so on-campus traffic doesn't even go through the rewriting proxy server and thus reduce the load on the server. The only way to do that is to enter the URLs both with and without the proxy settings and label the links "on-campus users click here" and "off-campus users click here". Then you have to deal with patrons that just don't get that concept...
We plan on implementing that on our web site by altering the links prior to display to the patron by looking at their IP address with ColdFusion... We hope that most people will get to the links from the web page and not from the OPAC.
HTH,
David
