RE: Item statuses

Hi Brenda,

We went live on Feb 18, to III from DRA Classic. The MESSAGE is like a Circ
Note. We use it for multi-part items, like books on tape, so when a patron
returns the item, the message comes up and they can check for the "3 cass 1
bklet" or whatever.

Subject: Item statuses

Good morning all:

The ALIS Consortium is in the throes of our conversion from DRA Classic to
Millennium. One of the issues we are contending with is item statuses. In
the DRA world items may have multiple statuses, but I understand that on
Millennium an item may only have one status.

Our III trainer has suggested that we use MESSAGE or IMESSAGE in the item
record to record the statuses that we create in Millennium such as Office
Use, Book Club, Damaged, etc. In that way we would leave the actual status
field "free" for use by the system to record actual system statuses such as
billed, in transit, etc.

I would like to create an additional variable length Millennium item field
and call it IALERT, and instruct my libraries to use that field for all
"non-system" statuses. In that way we would almost get 2 status fields.

Has anyone done anything similar? How do you handle the "one item, one
status" rule?

Thanks for your help.

Still weak but hanging in there.....
