- Subject: Duplicate barcode number fields
We are trying to setup a procedure to enter a Circulation control number in
our item records. This is a number used by the Circ Dept. to shelve our
compact discs behind the Circ Desk. We also occasionally need access to the
number for tracking down missing items.
We tried putting in the 1-6 digit number as an additional barcode number and
that seemed to work OK. The item checked out on the regular 14 numeral
barcode and gave no error message. Additionally, the Circ control number was
searchable using a barcode search. Because we are in a consortia, we are
trying to avoid using the bibliographic record for this function.
Basically, we had two questions:
1. Is anyone aware of specific problems with having two different barcode
numbers in a single item record? Particularly if one is not used for
checkout purposes?
2. Has anyone established a field in the item record to serve this type of
function, and if so, what was required?
TIA for any comments or suggestions.
