Travis,

According to the Release 2002 User's Manual:

Each record has a limit of 127 MARC and non-MARC fields with the same field group tag.

In other words, the absolute limit to the number of 505 fields would depend on how many other note fields the record contained. Since most 5XX fields share the same field group tag (usually "n" for NOTE), you would have to total the number of 5XX fields you currently have in the record, and then subtract from 127 to get the number of remaining 505 fields you could safely add to the record.

I have never seen this 127 same tagged fields limit reached, but I am assuming that the system would not allow you to enter any more fields of the same field group tag after you reach the limit. Also be aware that there is a 100,000 character limit for the entire bib record, so if you have only 10-15 REALLY long 505 fields, you could run up against this limit too.

Hope this helps.

All,

Is there a limit to the number of 505 fields a bib record can contain?
