- Subject: RFID and security systems
The Central Libraries at Baylor University in Waco, Texas are planning
to implement an RFID system during our 2003-2004 fiscal year. The
University administration wants an RFID system so that our patrons can
utilize a self-checkout system.
We are looking at 2 vendors. Our current security system is 3M Tattle
Tape and we are looking at their RFID system. The other vendor is
CheckPoint.
Our 3M security system was installed in 1978 and approximately 90% of
our collections (1.5 million items) are protected. While individual
current issues and bound volumes of periodicals have Tattle Tape strips,
the volumes do not have separate entries in our OPAC.
III Circulation Librarians -- What is your experience with security
systems? How long have you used your current system? Have you used
either of the above vendors? I especially want to hear from you if you
have switched from one vendor to the other.
Does anyone have an RFID system for circulation and/or security? What
vendor? How long have you used the system? What words of wisdom about
implementation, choosing a vendor, caveats about equipment and costs,
etc.? I would appreciate anything you can share with me. Do you know
any non-Innopac sites that I might contact about this subject.
You can reply on or off list to me. Other III member libraries might
have an interest here, also. Thank you!
