To Patricia and all:

If you have MilCat and can do Global Update in MilCat the 
process you want to do is EXREMELY easy! Just search to 
make the list of items or bibs that have the field that needs 
changing (usually working from a review file is a good way to 
go), and when you do "command input" you'll see that the first 
column in which you enter a choice is "field tag group." So, if 
it's currently "call number", you would choose call number. Fill 
in the other columns so that the system knows you want to 
chage the fields that have MARC tag 099. On the second line, 
the first column should be the new field tag group that you 
want, and the rest can say "no change" since it is only that 
first element that needs changing. 

We did this over a large number of item call numbers that for 
one of our libraries somehow ended up indexed as barcodes. 
(Or vice-versa--we don't know how it happened, but it did.) And 
it was because the call numbers had incorrectly been 
assigned to the field tag group for barcode (or v-v--can't 
remember which). Presto change-o! The Global Update fixed 
everything like a charm.
