At Carleton College, we now create item records for many new issues at the
time of checkin. We do this for the most heavily circulated titles (about
80 titles). This has greatly speeded up checkout, since the patron doesn't
have to wait while an on-the-fly record is created. Any issue without a
barcode is circulated through the on-fly process and cleaned up later.
