Thanks for the info.
I got a bit lost on your last paragraph - "The cost delta between $20,000 and $2,500 .. "
Could you please clarify?
Thanks,
Paul

Paul
Two years ago, while still on DRA, we upgraded our 3m selfchecks to
TCP/IP. The price you mentioned seems high, but close to what we paid.
It includes a $20 nic, a $500 service call, a software upgrade, and tech
manuals. We also had a problem with one of the cpus, so ended up getting
a new one out of the deal.
Our units are no longer under warranty, so when we migrated at Easter,
we did the setup ourselves. Wasn't hard, but remember we paid $900 for
the documentation...
Have you considered the patron self charge module? The cost delta
between $20,000 and $2,500 may make this an appealing option IMHO.

Thanks for the advice. This helps.
As we are digging deeper into this, I am getting frustrated at what I
learn. Our current 3M unit does not have a tcp/ip network card (at least
that I can see when I remove the back panel). Our legacy Galaxy system
uses the serial port for the "network" connectivity. Since I posted this
original question to the III list, I have learned from 3M that they
charge $945 to add a network card to a Model 5220. This seems to me to
be an exorbitant amount of money for adding a network card.
So, I'll continue to listen to the III users about their experiences,
and we are now exploring with 3M what kind of "trade-in" deals they
offer to simply upgrade the entire 3M unit to a current model.
I will also run this question by our III implementation team. So far
their answer to any questions about migrating legacy hardware like
receipt printers and barcode scanners has been "Post your question to
the users list"
Again, thanks for replying to my post, and for the info about your use
of 3M 5220 with III.

Hi Paul
We are using a 3M 5220 with Millennium. When we migrated to Millennium
(about 2 years ago) we completed a worksheet specifically for the self
check
unit and a member of III staff was assigned to this. III will need to
know:
Type of network connection
The login names & statistics group you will be using
The IP address of the machine(s)
Whether you plan to use PIN verification.
For the 3M side of things an engineer came on site & changed our login
script to reflect the IP address of the new server, the port no. etc.
I hope this helps
Regards

Subject: 3M self checkout model 5220
Hello Folks --
We are a new customer, and are migrating from an older text-based Galaxy
system to III Millennium. We currently have two 3M self checkout
systems,
model 5220 which work well on Galaxy.
Has anyone had experience installing this model 3M self-check on a III
system? Any tips, tricks and/or war stories to share?
Also, our Galaxy system is based on serial ports and DEC Netservers. Of
course, the new III system will be Ethernet & tcp/ip. Has anyone had any
experience upgrading a 3M model 5220 to add a network card? Again, do
you
have any tips, tricks or war stories?
Many thanks in advance for helping a new-bee.
Paul
