MilCataloging limitations with Global Update

Did you all know that Global Update can't work with large lists?  We've
been trying to delete the 510 fields from about 80,000 records and it
keeps locking up at the preview step. (It just gives us an hourglass -
for 4 days now)  We never get to the actual processing part.  III tells
us that because all these records are loaded onto the PC that the
problem is with our memory...that a PC just can't hold that much
data...that we need to break up the list into smaller parts.  Have
others run into this issue?  This was news to me.  Have you all heard
about this?  We are using a new XP machine with 512MB of memory.  This
seems strange to me...why can't the software save the data onto the
harddisk?
