help on default for new records

Has anybody created default for new records on the system for bib records
where you can set default values for variable fields?  I used the
character-based but only got prompts for fixed fields and prompts for
variable fields. You can set the default fixed field value, but you can not
set default for variable field values. For instance, I want one to have a
default value for 690 field, 500 field, etc.  Is there a way to do that?  I
know you can do it on GuiCat.

 

Any help will be appreciated.
