As a guilty non-responder I have a suggestion to make which might net you a
much greater response rate to the second survey. Could you find a way to
combine the online listing of sessions with the survey and maybe just add a
simple yes/no box to check? I was ready to respond but when I found that I
had to go to a separate download to see the sessions, then back to the
questionnaire, I just succumbed to the overload of getting workflow in place
and my work all caught up to get to a conference, etc., etc., and abandoned
the survey.
By the way, it was a most wonderful conference. I found it to be filled
with interesting, educational, inspiring topics; the hotel and meeting rooms
were delightful; everyone involved was kind and helpful.
Thank you,

I'm just back from San Jose and busy catching up on comments posted this
week about the IUG conference. I'm glad to see so many positive responses,
and want to respond just a minute about the issue of crowded sessions.
The program committee works hard and does a great job, but we rely on the
IUG members to tell us which programs are the ones they want to attend. We
do that with two different surveys. The first is with a list of selected
programs before anything is scheduled. This helps us know which ones are
popular enough to offer multiple times. The second survey comes after the
schedule is completed and helps us assign appropriate room sizes since you
will be looking at a specific program relative to others in the same time
slot.
This year we had 1100+ people attend IUG but only 200 responded to the
second program interest survey. We know that everyone will not reply, but
the higher the response rate, the more accurate our extrapolation and room
assignments can be. Nothing is written in stone, so we're not holding you
to your choice, but it really does make a difference to take the time to
respond and let us know.
I'm sure 2004 Program Chair Carol Wu will remind you all of this when it's
time to get information for the Boston meeting!
