We currently show only floor level locations, as well as some specialized
locations, such as the ready reference collection. We have two buildings
and multiple floors. The only very specific locations are the index tables
in Reference, e.g.
REFERENCE Table-4a
We used to show range specific locations for oversize materials, because
people had such difficulty location the oversize material. One of those
locations would read:
North-3rd Row 123
A regular book whould show only North-3rd.
Each time those areas of the stacks were shifted, we used create files and
rapid update to change the item locations. It was a lot of extra work at
times.
Eventually, it was decided to merge the oversize and the double oversize
collections into a single oversize area on each floor. The distinction
between oversize and double oversize was one of the things that had caused
problems. We also created better maps and signage on the floors.
So now the oversize have only the building/floor designation:
North-3rd Oversize
The locations are established by Technical Services when books are received
and cataloged. Someone in Reference maintains their item locations and
decides if it should be handled as a location or a note, e.g. Current year
on Index Table-4b
We did a major stack shift 4 or 5 years ago which meant about 70% of the
collection had its item location changed. Again, we used create files and
rapid update for this, with stack maintenance reporting their progress for
the day, then I would run those updates. We shouldn't require any more
major stack shifts for some time yet.
I would advise against using very specific locations such as we did with our
oversize, where we told people the range number. But I would recommend the
building/floor type level of location instead of a generic STACKS.

Subject: stack locations
we have beaten upon our chest and harangued well into the wee hours over
this important issue - and I am looking for guidance from the worldly and
the wise (no pressure)
if you are displaying stack locations in the public item record - would you
drop me a quick note - our staff is in the middle of a heated debate about
the pros and cons of this issue - with the public staff saying it is worth
the pain and the tech service side saying - it isn't worth the work - any
input is welcome -
thanks for any help
