Greetings -

We are finally moving on to Millennium, and (of course) ran into a
problem. On several of our older WIN2K machines, the install says it
cannot create a directory, and does not put an icon on the desktop.
What it fails to do is create \winnt\profiles\all users\desktop, and
create a millennium.lnk there (and hence the desktop one as well, since
my guess it it copies it from there).

My solution was to copy a \millennium directory from a working WIN2K
installation, and copy a working icon to the desktop and this missing
directory (after creating it, of course!).

Any idea why it does not work? In all case, the login is the default
administrative login. I even tried to create a new login with admin
rights, to no avail, and the machines are windows updated to the
minute. My best guess is that early WIN2K installs protected the \WINNT
directory even from admin users to some extent (the JRE install DOES
manage to update a directory in the same area,
\winnt\profiles\administrator), and the win updates do not fix this
problem.

Also, will my solution work? I can see no reason why not, but no time
like the present to ask.

Rob
