Hello, Jack,

I read with interest your proposed discussion topic for the Annual meeting
in Toronto. I am volunteering to be a presenter, if you still need one.
Although I do not have a specific talk ready at this time, I am thinking of
discussing something around the theme: "There is a reason the word 'service'
is part of the Technical Service department." I would include my personal
philosophy of how our work impacts the patron (or how it SHOULD serve to
impact the patron) and also include several examples of projects we have
undertaken at the Richter Library to improve public access to our materials
and to assist reference services.

You may be interested to know that I recently gave a presentation at ALA
Midwinter in New Orleans at a meeting of the ALCTS Role of the Professional
in Academic Technical Services Discussion Group. The subject under
discussion was the role of technical services professionals in responding to
the budget and staffing challenges currently facing academic libraries and
the role of technical services librarians in planning for and managing
change.

I hope to see you in Philadelphia.
