POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT - Library Director 

THE POSITION
Library Director, The Taft School, Watertown, Connecticut

DUTIES
Responsible for overall administrative responsibilities for program, staff
development, acquisition, circulation, cataloging and maintenance of
collections.  Oversees the general administration of the Innopac online
integrated library automation system.  Participates in the Taft School
Education Policy Committee related to academic affairs.  Supervises one
reference librarian, one technical services librarian, and 8 staff. 
Prepares and oversees the library budget.  Sets quality of standards for
service excellence, and implements library policies and procedures. 
Responsible for strategic planning and development of long term goals to
keep the Library on track with the mission of The Taft School.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
ALA accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science and at least 5 years
experience as a professional librarian.  Strong liberal arts background
from his/her graduate or undergraduate education.  Ability to work well
with staff and high school students.  Experience with computer operations
and web-based catalog.  Extensive experience with library technology and
Internet research  resources.  Experience with fully integrated library
automation system (Taft School Library uses innovation interfaces as its
library automation system and OCLC as its provider for bibliographic
records).  Familiarity with electronic access to full-text databases, such
as ProQuest Direct, SIRS, Ethnic NewsWatch, Books-in Print.

The successful candidate will demonstrate sensitivity to the concerns of a
residential independent school library and its users, the ability to
communicate a strong library image, excellent oral and written
communication skills, a positive interpersonal style, and the ability to
work in a team environment exercising flexibility and initiative.

Preferred:
Administrative and supervisory experience in a library, preferably an
academic or school library.  Prior working experience with teens.  Solid
knowledge of computing, including Windows environment.  Previous budgeting
experience.

APPOINTMENT
Faculty status, 12-month appointment.  Competitive salary dependent on
experience.  Excellent benefits.

THE TAFT SCHOOL
The Taft School is a highly selective coeducational boarding school for
students in grades 9 through Post-Graduate.  Founded in 1890 by Horace
Dutton Taft, brother of United States President William Howard Taft, the
school is situated on 220 acres in Western Connecticut in the town of
Watertown.  Our faculty, curriculum, and facilities combine to fulfill

The Hulbert Taft, Jr. Library houses approximately 56,000 volumes, 120
current periodicals subscriptions, access to many electronic resources,
and uses Innovative Interfaces.  An active program of user instruction is
in place.  In addition to serving The Taft School community during the
academic year, the Library also serves two, 5-week summer programs in
July.  The Library has recently experienced extensive renovation.  It has
a fully developed home page in the school’s intranet.
