Title: RE: Patriot Act

Sometimes sensitive information is preserved due to institutional requirements.  Example:  we must keep financial data 7 years.  This means that we regularly archive data from the Fines Paid file.  That data only relates to books for which there were fines/bills paid or excused, but does therefore contain some partial past history of who had what book at what time.

I guess I think that the conversations around this just highlight how
important it is to:

1. Preserve only that data which is necessary for the running of the
institution (including excellent backups).
2. Make sure that when sensitive, confidential information is no longer
needed it is completely and properly eliminated from the system.
3. Be sure that systems and training are adequate to protect the information
while it is needed for operations.
