A set of 20 will be appropriate.  Check with Innovative to ensure tape compatibility with your server.  We changed our server last year and we had to switch to DDS III tapes.
I recommend twenty so that you have a set per week for four weeks and you will rotate each tape once a monthly.  This way you guarantee data protection and put in a swift system for tape rotation.  In our Institution we use twenty tapes, five per week.  Each week is labeled by set.  In other words we have four sets, sets 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Each set has a Monday through Friday tape.  We start with:
Monday Set 1, Tuesday Set 1, Wednesday Set 1, Thursday Set 1 and Friday Set 1.  This completes week one.  We begin week two with a fresh set of Set 2 and the tapes are labeled again Monday Set 2, Tuesday Set 2 etc.  We do the same for week 3 and four.

We begin with set 1 and run through set four.  Then we start recycling the tapes again from set one.  This way let's say something happens to our server and we need to restore data, we know specifically what tape we used last or identify the last good backup by the date and tape name.

This way the tapes last longer too, they do not wear out so easily as they get to be used only once a month.

Hope this helps.

Subject: MILLENNIUM: backups

Hi all,

Next month, our server from Innovative will arrive.  We're going with their turn-key system, using the newest version of Millennium.  We're a fairly small University library, with about 100,000 volumes, and about 5,000 patron records.  Consider this, about how many tapes would you recommend that we purchase for backup purposes.  I was considering 3-weeks worth, but I would like to hear from those of you who are currently using their system and running backups.  Do you have a written policy concerning your backup procedure?  Do you store any off-site?  Any information you can provide will be of great help!  Thanks and Happy Holidays!
