Before we deleted any items, we searched for each one of them. If they had been returned, we forgave the fines and deleted the patron.

Has anyone ever dealt with the problem of having a large number of inactive
patron records in their system with items still checked out on them? We
currently have a number of patron records in our system that haven't been
updated since 1997 that have items checked out on them. I would like to
"free up" more patron records in our systems by deleting records that are
inactive (basically, check in all of the billed items, delete the bib and
item records, and finally delete the patron records) in order to create
more space for new patron records. I think it's safe to assume that most of
the material that's been out for five years or more isn't coming back. Has
anyone done this before or is it simply easier and/or more advisable to
purchase more patron records? If anyone has decided to delete records in
this manner, how do you determine what and/or when to delete?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
