- Subject: Z39.50: Cataloging Can & Should
There has been quite a bit of discussion on this list recently about
finding information for Z39.50 connections. We've seen lists of servers,
and links to lists. From these lists, I can get the technical information
to connect to various Z39.50 servers. But should I?
Capturing records for cataloging raises ethical and legal discussions that
I don't want to restart. Such discussions are irrelevant as soon as the
host says, "Sure, use my records," or "You're welcome to search and view,
but please don't copy my records." And all _that_ takes is the time to
ask. At the same time, I'm sure MELVYL or OHIOLINK doesn't want to be
bothered every time somebody wants to copy a record.
The U.S. Library of Congress gives the library community carte blanche to
copy and use their records. Have any other libraries that offer Z39.50
access drawn up policies or preferred usage guidelines for Z39.50? Do you
have such policies/guidelines posted online, or are you willing to
share? I'm especially interested in whether any consortia have done so.
Are there any resources that, in addition to technical details, post
policies or preferred usage guidelines for Z39.50 servers? For those on
the IUG list who manage such resources and don't include that information:
would you include that information if it were available?
