- Subject: Title searching/authority issue
I have a question about title searching that someone may have come
across. During a title search, it appears that our authority
records may not be operating properly. When a user enters the 4XX
heading, they get a see reference and any results that happen to
have the 245 of the non-preferred heading. I think the user should only
be given the see reference as a result to ease any confusion.
See the name/title authority below for example:
000 00615cz 2200169n 450
001 3054473
005 19950505135002.0

In our system, a title search for the cross-reference Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde retrieves the following results:
You searched for the TITLE: dr jekyll and mr
7 entries found, entries 1-7 are: MEDIA
AUTHOR
Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
1 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde [VHS]
2 --> See STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS, 1850-1894. STRANGE CASE OF DR.

3 Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Stevenson, Robe
4 Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Stevenson, Robe
5 Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Stevenson, Robe
6 Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Stevenson, Robe
7 Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Stevenson, Robe
The see reference is leading the user to the uniform title, but the
results display records with a 245 of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as
well (but displays the 240 as the entry retrieved). My concern is that
the user is led to believe that these are the only results since the
see reference matches the other results. Wouldn't it be better to only
get a see reference and no results matching the Robert Louis Stevenson
heading? The user is then forced to choose the see reference and they
see we have many other records under the uniform title.
If the display settings are changed somehow to display the 245 rather
than the 240, is the problem corrected? Is confusion still going
to occur when their search retrieved results that match what was
entered? If the display settings are changed, I believe that my author
search then would cease to function well because my see references would
only point to the titles that happen to have a 245 matching
the uniform title.
I guess I would like the title search to function as well as an author
search. Scrolling through the results of an author search for
Stevenson, Robert Louis retrieves only a see reference to Strange case
of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde heading. This may not be an authority "problem", but simply a
weakness in my understanding of authority structures and title
indexing issues. Any help with this issue is much appreciated.
