I could not agree more. It is confusing. What's more, there is vital
information in the III summary grid that does not show in the MARC display
in the OPAC, which is a nuisance.

Just to say thanks to Jeffrey and also Janet Aucock for this.
I do think it is extremely confusing the way MARC21 leader and 008 are all
jumbled up together, and of course the cataloguers don't like having to
enter data twice - eg some elements having to go into Innopac leader and
again into 008.

REC STAT is III is actually the Leader byte 05 (position 6).  The end bytes 
in the 008 are the
leader.  The first three positions you are referring to are the date 
entered on file (008/00-05).

III mixes the Leader (LDR) into the 008.  Very confusing for the neophyte, 
let alone
the most experienced users.  It would be better for us to have an separated 
LDR field
to be able to code--with out the confusion.

See page # 105062 in the III online manual that gives the information 
regarding this
mix and match.
