We have electronic entrance gates that use our university ID card to count
students, staff, and faculty. Other patrons (mainly county users) pass
through without using any card. The idea is that the university patrons
will be deducted from the total to give us a count of the county users.
This was mandated when we entered into an agreement with Broward County to
build a joint-use facility. (See the Sept. 2002 issue of INNTouch which
will be out shortly.) This is not tied in any way to our circ system.
Planning the counting was probably the most problematic design and
technology element of our entire construction project. We wanted something
seamless that would be unobtrusive to the patrons walking into the building.
Several vendors initially promised that the technology would allow a "read"
of the ID card even if it was in someone's pocket, purse, or backpack. But
the reality is that the "read" is only good from a few inches away. So, if
patrons have a university ID card, they must get it out and swipe it against
the scanner at the gates. This is probably more than anyone wanted to know
about gate counts.
It's my understanding that the Patron API software can be integrated with
hardware to do the counts you're asking about.

Can anyone on the list please help us.
Is there a counter in Millennium - Circulation Module where one can
count the amount of visitors to the library by for example by using the
patron bar code.
