You can probably easily do what you suggest above using macro languages (e.g., OCLC Passport/CatME macro language) or scripting languages (e.g., Microsoft's freely available VBScript). I wrote such a 1- or 2-line macro which, upon pressing a particular keystroke combination, automatically appends my initials and the current date at the end of each cross-reference I create in III authority records.
