Here at Ohio University we find that the default wording of the boxes to be
filled in by users validating themselves in order to use our e-reserves is
very confusing. Right now they get a screen with three boxes labeled:
1. YOUR NAME
2. Social Security# (no hyphens/no spaces)
3. PIN
It's this 3rd category that is confusing people, especially freshmen who
often experience our library for the first time as e-reserve users. In
fact, librarians who work online reference report that at least half of
there queries are variations of "What is a PIN?" When students guess and
type in their university ID number or whatever else, they get a second
screen with *four* boxes to be filled in, the third now labled "ENTER YOUR
PIN" and the new fourth box cryptically labeled "5s."
How can we get some wording after the 3rd (PIN) box that reads something
like:
"First time? Make up a Personal Identification Number & confirm on next
screen?"
(what we have on our View Your Circulation Record screen --

Or even better how can we get a link on the e-reserve login screen to a web
page that explains PINs in detail?
