WebOpac limit search page

These drop-down lists of material-type, language, location etc. are all derived
from fixed-length fields. Our library is interested in a drop-down list of genre
terms, which we implement in the variable length 655 field. This would eliminate
the search failures due to misspelling and ignorance of controlled vocabulary. The
information I've gotten from Innovative thus far has not been particularly
helpful. One person there has mentioned that some libraries have implemented a
drop-down limit for publishers in the 260.

Has anyone had any experience with this, or have any suggestions? Could it be
implemented at the html level, adding the information to the http request?
