Well, I only received two responses to my question (both off list). Neither
knew how to make the series title come up when a patron searches "A to Z."
One of my respondants said that it will come up and display correctly in
the browse list if you search "A A to Z." Unfortunately, patrons won't
search that way.

I tried adding cross references for "To Z . . ." and "A A to Z . . ." in
the series authority record to trick the system into directing a patron who
searches "A to Z." However, while the "See . . ." link shows up on the
screen, it doesn't actually take the patron anywhere. Then I tried adding
an 830 for "A A to Z . . ." to the bib record, and aside from being so ugly
that it made me cringe, it didn't work either.

So, the solution I came up with was to delete the authority record and
convert the 440 to:
246 1_ $i At head of title : $a A to Z of women

Now when a patron searches "A to Z . . ." the record will at least come up.

The only conclusion I was able to draw from all this is that Innovative
simply can not handle series titles and authority records beginning with
what it perceives to be an article. While "A to Z of women" should be
treated as a series, putting it in a 246 appears to be the only way to make
it searchable in this system at this time. And if searchability and
technical correctness are in conflict, the library I work at chooses
searchability.

Thanks again to both of the kind folk who replied to my question.
