JOB AD/POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Reference/Public Services Librarian (Univ. of Georgia Law Library)

interested. The position is available beginning July 2002 due to a
retirement. We hope to interview on campus in late August with a
negotiable start date no later than January 2003. The application

POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Reference/Public Services Librarian, University of Georgia
School of Law, Alexander Campbell King Law Library
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for leadership and supervision of the Public Services
Department, which includes 3 full time Library staff members. Takes the
lead in improving and expanding current services to various patron
groups. Communicates library policies and procedures to both patrons
and library staff. Maintains library web pages concerning available
public services. Stays knowledgeable about Innovative's Millennium
software functionality and new developments in Circulation, Interlibrary
Loan, and Reserves.
Serves as a member of the Reference Team by participating in Reference
Desk duties, including evening/weekend shifts, contributing to the
development of Reference services, conducting bibliographic instruction
sessions, and giving tours of the library facility. Contributes to the
overall management of the Library through participation on the Library
Steering Group, the User Services Team, and the Collection Development
Team. Participates in professional development activities, such as
conferences, workshops, and association memberships. Position reports
to the Director of the Law Library.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Success in this position requires: a cooperative, service-minded
attitude; effective interpersonal and communication skills; initiative
in providing patron services; ability to think creatively about using
technology to provide materials and services for patrons, in addition to
computing skills; enthusiasm for contributing to a collaborative,
team-based management environment; demonstrated evidence of skills in
organization, trouble-shooting, and problem-solving; awareness of
current developments in library public services and circulation issues;
understanding of broad library issues; dedication to professional
development.
Required: JD from ABA accredited law school; MLS from ALA accredited
library school; 3-5 years of library experience in a relevant area, such
as public services or circulation, preferably in a supervisory role;
demonstrated ability to supervise and lead a department; experience with
online library systems, preferably Innovative Interfaces; experience
with standard office and web authoring software; knowledge of database
and internet searching; familiarity with legal materials.
Desirable: Supervisory experience in an academic law library; 3-5 years
as a professional law librarian; demonstrated experience with
Innovative's integrated library system, especially with Innovative's
Millennium circulation module; project management experience; experience
in managing and problem-solving daily operations; demonstrated team
management participation; bibliographic knowledge of at least one
language in addition to English
BENEFITS:
Standard benefits package includes life, health, and disability
insurance; mandatory participation in the state or optional retirement
system (such as TIAA/CREF); 21 days annual leave; and 12 paid holidays.
Salary minimum: $47,000.00. Adjustments may be made commensurate with
qualifications and experience.
ABOUT THE LAW LIBRARY:
The University of Georgia is located in Athens, a small city about 60
miles northeast of Atlanta. The Alexander Campbell King Law Library has
a rich, established collection numbering more than 460,000 volumes and
volume equivalents and strives to use library and information technology
in creative ways. During the summer of 2002, the Library's current
Innovative online system is being upgraded to Innovative's Millennium
system with many additional new features. The collection is also being
outfitted this summer with Checkpoint's Digital RFID security and
inventory system. The staff consists of nine Librarians, 11 classified
Library staff personnel, and five Computing Services Specialists who
serve a student body of approximately 650 JD and LLM students and a law
faculty of approximately 40 members. The Law Library oversees all
computing services of the Law School, in addition to delivering
