The Captain John Smith Library at Christopher Newport University is
seeking a Head of Cataloging.  Reporting to the University Librarian,
the Head of Cataloging is responsible for cataloging and classifying
library materials.  Duties will include the development of policies and
procedures for a staff of three, original and complex copy cataloging,
and coordinating activities with the Acquisitions and Serials
Departments.  The successful candidate will provide leadership in the
provision of electronic services, including access to electronic
resources received through the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA),
JSTOR, and NetLibrary.   As a professional librarian, the Head of
Cataloging is a member of the instructional faculty and is expected to
meet University standards for tenure and promotion.  This position will
also assist in the provision of reference services during an occasional
evening or weekend and participate in the Library's instruction program.

The Captain John Smith Library has embarked on an ambitious program of
expansion and renovation that will double the size of the library in the
near future, creating an interactive learning environment for the 21st

The required qualifications are an ALA-accredited MLS degree with three
years professional cataloging experience; experience with computers;
experience with the recognized cataloging standards and resources
necessary to process materials in an academic setting (e.g. AACR2
Revised, LC Classification System, LC Subject Headings, and/or LC Rule
Interpretations); strong interpersonal skills; creativity; and excellent
oral and written communication skills.

The preferred qualifications are experience with OCLC; cataloging
standards; authority control; general reference materials; online
databases; and the Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III) system.
Supervisory experience is a plus.
