Thanks again to all the people who contacted me with their experiences.

I have learned that there is a variable code "j" designated for PO#'s which
may solve our problems.  It must be turned on by III, and I am in contact
with an Acq specialist to find out more about how this field works.  Among
our
requirements are sortability and certain printing issues.  At this point I 
also do not know whether it generates a PO# or allows free-text entry or 
entry of codes from a table. 

I will report to the list when I have my answers.
