FYI: Barcode inventory with a PDA test completed

Just FYI, for anyone considering this:

We've just done a trial using a Symbol barcode reader module in a
Visor PDA, to augment the Percon B321 unit and software from III.

I consulted with III and they were helpful but not far along with this
yet; I was able to give them some information on how to do this
and we might hope for some III improvements in this area soon.

Our manual and information is at:
http://libcat.uafortsmith.edu/screens/manbarc.html

PDA: Visor (any model that accepts the modules should work);
this could also be done with Palm using a slightly different Symbol
unit.

Barcode Reader module: Symbol CSM 150 (there is also a version
of this for Palms)

software for the module: from Indiana State at
http://paulasay.indstate.edu/observer/
which is actually written for an Endeavor Voyager system, but by
stopping at the point of getting an ASCII file, the results can be
used by III systems. This is freeware, and designed for Palms, but
works fine for the Visor and Palm-compatibles.

This still requires you to have the III inventory software, of course,
but IMHO, the III software should be made available separately for
just this sort of application. We wanted something to augment and
- in a pinch - replace our B321, and this is a far cheaper alternative.
